What causes a double-chin?

Submental fullness—commonly referred to as double-chin—is a common yet under-treated facial aesthetic condition that can impact a broad range of adults, including both women and men. Causes may include:

• Aging. A double-chin may naturally develop as you age.
• Weight Gain. A double-chin may be a result of gaining weight.
• Genetics. Simply said, a double-chin may be part of your DNA.

A double-chin can make you look older and heavier than you actually are. Sometimes, no matter how much you diet or exercise, the condition may not go away. You are not alone. According to a 2014 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), 68% of people said they’re bothered by submental fullness*

How does BELKYRA™ work?

The active ingredient in BELKYRA™ is Deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, BELKYRA™ causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

How is it administered?

BELKYRA™ is given in a 15-20 minute office visit. We will give you a series of injections into the fat under your chin at each treatment session. We will customize your BELKYRA™ treatment based on the amount of submental fullness you have and your treatment goals. Together, we’ll decide the treatment plan that’s right for you.

How many treatments will I need and does it hurt?

Many patients treated with BELKYRA™ experience visible contouring of their chin profile with only 2 to 4 treatments. Some people require up to 6 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart, in order to achieve results. Once your chin profile has improved, you may not need to be treated with BELKYRA™ again.  A Topical numbing agent will be applied, or a tiny injection of local anesthesia to help make your BELKYRA™ treatment as comfortable as possible.

Is there any downtime?

For most patients, downtime is minimal and occurs most commonly after the first treatment session. When scheduling your treatments, please keep your social plans and work commitments in mind. The most common side effects of BELKYRA™ include: swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness. These are not all of the possible side effects of BELKYRA™.

Who is not a good candidate for BELKYRA™?

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not suitable candidates for this treatment. Also, patients who have severe liver or heart problems may not be able to undergo this treatment. Patients who have a lot of excess skin or lax neck muscles may be better candidates for a skin tightening treatment.
