Your hair is part of your signature style. But, when your hair starts to thin or you lose a significant amount of hair, it can impact your overall self-image and self-confidence. Hair loss can occur for a variety of different reasons. Male/female pattern baldness, androgenic alopecia, stress, pregnancy or post-menopause, and hormone fluctuations are all viable culprits.

It is no secret that as we age, our hair tends to thin. For men, this is most noticeable along the hairline and at the top of the head, and for women, hair may thin out around the roots causing bald spots. For decades, men and women have accepted hair loss as a part of life and aging. Thankfully, that attitude is shifting.

There are plenty of treatments on the market to address hair loss. You can take medications, undergo hair transplants, apply topical solutions, or even try volumizing and hair-growth boosting shampoo. While it is great to have options, what if there was a natural solution to increase hair growth and thickness? No medications or creams necessary!

You can increase hair growth and thickness with your own blood. It sounds kind of spooky, but platelet-rich plasma injection for hair growth treatment is proven, safe, and effective.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

PRP is a concentrated source of growth factors found in your body. It is produced when a practitioner takes a sample of your own blood and spins it down using a specialized centrifuge into its base components. One of which is growth factors. Growth factors stimulate cellular growth, proliferation, healing, and cellular differentiation, improving collagen and elastin production. PRP can be used to stimulate cell growth in a variety of areas of the body, including the face and chest. You may have heard about the Vampire Facial which incorporates PRP into the face to stimulate collagen growth. PRP for hair loss is very similar.

Specifically, PRP regenerates the dermal papilla cells located in your scalp tissue while stimulating blood vessel growth in your skin. Ultimately, PRP for hair loss will trigger natural hair growth. The PRP will also increase blood supply to the hair follicles and boost the thickness of the hair shaft.  The result is a natural regrowth of hair with increased thickness.

What to Expect: PRP Treatment for Hair

After a comprehensive consultation with your skincare provider, your practitioner will take a sample of your blood and break it down using a centrifuge. This will take about 10 minutes. Your blood separates into three different layers. The first is platelet-poor plasma. The second is platelet-rich plasma, and the third is red blood cells. Your practitioner will use the platelet-rich plasma for your treatment by placing this into a specialized syringe.

Next, your practitioner will locate the areas of your scalp that require hair growth and thickness stimulation. They will apply a topical anesthetic to reduce discomfort before injecting the platelet-rich plasma into the scalp, about every half inch or so across the target treatment area. The entire process takes about half an hour or less. You should feel no discomfort during treatment, but if you experience any pain, you should notify your practitioner.

Once complete, you can resume your daily activities. You can shower a few hours after treatment if needed but avoid putting dyes or harsh chemicals on your hair for a few days. Most patients receive treatment once a month for three to four months. Then, they come back for a maintenance appointment every three to six months. The duration of your maintenance treatment will vary based on your body’s response to the procedure and your desired treatment goals.

Are There Risks or Side Effects to PRP Treatment for Hair?

One of the best aspects of PRP treatment is that you are using your very own blood. Therefore, side effects or adverse reactions to treatment are highly rare. It doesn’t get more natural than your own blood! While risks are minimal, injections may cause injury to blood vessels or nerves, calcification at injection points, scar tissue, or infection.

Shortly after your procedure, you may notice some redness or tightness in your scalp. After the first few hours, you also may experience pinpoint bleeding. This is completely normal, and you should not be alarmed. You will be instructed to keep the area clean and refrain from touching the treated area, exercising extensively, and avoiding swimming pools and hot tubs until the day following your procedure.

Am I a Good Candidate for PRP for Hair Loss?

You are a great candidate for PRP treatment for hair if you have male/female pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia (the fancy name for hair loss). In fact, if you’re experiencing early hair loss, you are a perfect candidate and will see the best results.

In case you didn’t know, your hair goes through four main stages of growth (growth, transition, rest, and shedding). Blood vessels in your skin care for your hair follicles and produce a nourished shaft of hair during the growth stage. But, if you experience hair loss, your hair follicles may be weakened, and thus, your hair becomes finer. Then the follicle stops growing hair, causing baldness and hair loss.

There are some conditions that may exclude you from being able to receive PRP for hair loss. For example, if you are on blood thinners, have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, are a heavy smoker, or are currently pregnant, your practitioner may reject you for treatment.

Sometimes a history of acute or chronic infections, cancer, liver disease, chronic skin disease, metabolic disorder, low platelet count, and thyroid disease may preclude you from this hair restoration procedure. Be sure to share your comprehensive medical history with your practitioner prior to receiving PRP treatment. This is for your safety as well as the efficacy of the procedure.

PRP for Hair Loss Results

The first thing you will notice after treatment is a reduction of shedding. That means less hair stuck to your clothes or inside the bathtub thanks to PRP. As the treatment works and your natural hair growth cycle occurs, you will gradually experience fuller hair and less noticeable baldness patterns on the scalp and crown of the head. Remember, consistency is essential for maximum results. You will probably need to undergo multiple treatments as well as occasional maintenance treatments to continue to stimulate new hair growth. Even though PRP is a successful treatment option, is not a completely permanent solution for hair loss.
