What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally, invasive procedure that’s used to treat many skin concerns; also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars, scars in general and stretch marks. It can be used in anti-aging procedures, such as sun spots caused by hyper pigmentation. Microneedling isn’t effective for hair loss, unless added with PRP.
How does microneedling work?
Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to produce more collagen. The idea from the procedure causes slight injury to the skin and that the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue. This new skin tissue is, in turn, more even in tone and texture. By encouraging the skin to make new tissue, there may be more collagen to help make the skin firmer, too.
You might be candidate if you have:
- acne scars
- age spots (also called “sun spots”)
- fine lines and wrinkles
- large pores
- other types of scars Trusted Source
- reduced skin elasticity
- uneven skin tone
When will I see results?
Most patients see results after the first treatment. Individual results vary depending on patient. It is most common to see positive results as soon as 1-2 weeks after the first treatment.
Precautions and side-effects of microneedling
The most common side effect is minor skin irritation immediately following the procedure. You may also see redness for a few days, and notice dry skin with healing. You may not be an ideal candidate for micro needling if you:
- are pregnant
- have certain skin diseases, such as psoriasis or eczema
- have open wounds
- have had radiation therapy recently
The recovery time is minimal. You may notice skin irritation and redness within the first few days following the procedure. This is a natural response to the small “injuries” during treatment. You can go back to work or school after the procedure if you’re comfortable however, some people will lay low for that evening and then apply soft makeup until redness is relieved. After microneedling, your skin works fairly quickly to rejuvenate new tissue. In theory, you should see results within a couple of weeks.
